How do you start a barter faire?

Postby megan » Sun Dec 13, 2009 11:08 pm

I recently started talking with some folks that want to start a barter faire in Mendocino county. Yay! The only problem is that only one other person in the group has actually been to one (26 years ago) and everyone else seems to have their own idea of what they are, and seem to be bringing their own particular agendas and ideas to the table. I'd like to see something that is a real barter faire - though small at first, of course - outdoors in nature, full of interesting people, a good time and a place for trading and building local economies and community. It seems like it's really hard to describe this vision to someone who's never been to a barter faire. But, there really isn't anything like a barter faire down here.

Has anyone here started a faire before? Any tips, ideas, first things we need to get in order? I'm thinking the first order of business is finding the location - preferably in a beautiful natural setting on private land and something centrally located in the county. I know there's a lot of infrastructure and planning involved, but not really sure about the legalities and whatnot. If anyone has experiences to share, people I can get in touch with to ask questions, or ideas, please let me know. Thanks!

Blessings! :)
peace!

Hi Megan,
Sounds like a great idea.
Focus on the vendors, food, produce, craft and such.
They are the focus of a barter faire. Get a vendor coordinator, they will hunt for vendors, and can be the contact for the health dept. Keep the prices low for them. Don't require an application for craft vendors. Let them just show up. It is easier that way. Food vendors, on the other hand may need one. I do not know the regulations in Cali but they will need to fill out an application at your county health dept to get a temporary food permit and then will be inspected on site.

If music becomes a discussion, keep it volunteer only. The focus is not the music but is only an enhancement of atmosphere. You will put out a huge amount of money if bands get paid. Look for acoustic musicians to hoast a couple Hospitality fires. Let them know they are getting in free and their camp site will be styled out.

Speaking of fires.
check about fire permits which may be a deciding factor on your date of the faire.

Other things to consider.
porta potties--

pre site set up-(site oversite)

Post site break down-clean up-recycling

Gate- Important--Who is in charge here-- Who is dealing with the money--is there accountability.

If you make any kind of profit where does this money go. Is there a non-profit. Is it for profit?

Volunteers-do you have enough?- What volunteer positions need to be filled prior to the faire and during the faire? How many volunteer positions are needed.
Shall you call them coordinators.

???Security???

Dare I say Rules, regulations, requests of attendees???

Do you need a festival permit? Is there a minimum limit to need a permit?

If you have any questions don't hesitate to e-mail me at:

I understand your concern about keeping the idea of a barter faire true to its name and history.

Thanks so much for the information & ideas. We are definitely new to this, so your experience is invaluable, thank you!

I feel like we need to start by focalizing and getting a group of planners together who will help create the vision and plan the event - lots of details to consider for sure. I think the toughest part will probably be finding the location...

We are probably going to be putting the barter faire planner on the back burner for now - as we're trying to focus on buying some land & starting a homestead this year. But if anyone else in the Northern California area is interested in helping with a local barter faire, please let me know & let's keep in touch... we will manifest it! :)
peace!
